Our story

slice by slice est. 2021

How it began

two businesses one great idea

Born from a shared passion for great hospitality and eco-conscious brewing between Ben Washbrook, Byron Rees and the Bluestone Brewing Company, we’ve grown from a hidden courtyard gem into a West Wales favorite, bringing people together over great food, exceptional drinks, and a laid-back atmosphere.

From the rugged coast of St Davids to the vibrant riverbanks of Cardigan, GRAIN is all about the simple things done exceptionally well: Our pizzas are at the centre of what we do. Each one is a labour of love — hand-stretched dough, carefully sourced ingredients, and bold, generous toppings. From classics done right to inventive flavours like our famous Marmite base, “The Bob”, our menu is designed to surprise and delight. Seasonal specials showcase the best Welsh produce, while gluten-free and vegan options ensure there’s something for everyone.

Beer is in our DNA. Our bar is stocked a rotating list of craft beers from Bluestone Brewing Company, each chosen to complement the food and brewed just a few miles away.

But GRAIN is more than a restaurant. We’re a community hub, a relaxed gathering place, and a team of people passionate about good hospitality. Whether you’re a local, a walker fresh from the Pembrokeshire coast, or a visitor discovering Britain’s smallest city, shopping in Carmarthen’s town centre or wanting to sit by the river Teifi in Cardigan, our cosy interiors, vibrant team, and dog-friendliness welcome make it the perfect spot to slow down, savour the moment, and enjoy the best of food and drink together.

With a reputation for quality and a loyal following, GRAIN has quickly become a St David’s favourite — so we always recommend booking ahead to guarantee your table.

The journey

Five years, one recipe.

    It begins...

We opened the doors and started doing what we do best, marrying traditional dough-making techniques with great local ingredients. Keeping things simple, laid-back and as always dog-friendly. With a vibe that's made us a favorite for locals and coast-bound travelers...

    …When 1 becomes 2...

...Carmarthen is the next door to open and further the GRAIN Story, bringing the same lo-fi luxury to Carmarthenshire but this time with a more grown-up feel, more on the menu and more of what we do best, blood good food......Carmarthen is the next door to open and further the GRAIN Story, bringing the same lo-fi luxury to Carmarthenshire but this time with a more grown-up feel, more on the menu and more of what we do best, blood good food...

  3. 2025

    …The Trifecta.

...We took over a local landmark, and in the process reopened the doors to what is now the largest GRAIN venue! With a swanky new tipi, a lick of paint and a lot of smiles, Cardigan felt like home instantly, and completed our roster of plucky pizza parlours... for now!

More than pizza

Rooted in our communities.

Hospitality with soul means looking after the people and places that make us who we are — our team, our neighbours and the corner of west Wales we call home.

Real Living Wage employer

The Real Living Wage

We're a Real Living Wage employer. Every single person on our team is paid at or above the independently calculated rate — not the legal minimum.

Giving back locally

We partner with local charities and grassroots clubs, hosting fundraisers and donating pizza prices to local schools, clubs and fundraising events across Cardigan, St Davids and Carmarthen.

Welsh by sourcing

Beer brewed within an hour of every door, produce from growers down the road, and suppliers we know by name. Keeping it local keeps it good.

Lighter on the land

Minimal waste and a steady push to cut single-use plastic. Small, honest steps we keep building on year on year.
